Durante i lavori di restauro effettuati a seguito dei guasti comportati dal terremoto del 1997 alla Botte dei Varano, è tornato alla luce un tunnel in travertino di epoca romana che corre parallelo al manufatto quattrocentesco.
During restoration which was carried out on the Botte dei Varano after the damage sustained by the earthquake of 1997, a Roman tunnel, built in travertine marble running parallel to the 15th Century construction being renovated , was unearthed.
