La Botte dei Varano, fu fatta costruire da Giulio Cesare nella seconda metà del XV secolo, in concomitanza con la grande opera di bonifica di Colfiorito intrapresa per favorire il pascolo delle sue sterminate mandrie e greggi. Il progetto di ingegneria idraulica fu ideato allo scopo di convogliare le acque dei canali che solcavano l’altopiano. Le acque dell’antico lago sulle cui sponde occidentali sorgeva la città di Plestia confluirono in una galleria sotterranea in pietra squadrata e con volta a botte e, dopo un percorso di 400 m, uscivano a monte di Serravalle per dar vita al fiume Chienti. Ciò che resta oggi delle antiche paludi che prima dell’intervento coprivano l’altopiano costituisce un’oasi protetta che si trova oltre il confine umbro.

Botte dei Varano was built by Giulio Cesare da Varano in the second half of the XV Century, when the plain of Colfiorito was reclaimed in order to give better grazing to the abundant livestock that was kept there. This endeavour in hydraulic engineering was meant to channel the water flowing across the high plain. The waters of the lake, on the Eastern edge of which rose the ancient city of Plestia, flowed into a subterranean stone gallery with a vaulted ceiling. After flowing 400 metres, the water gushes out of the mountainside above the town of Serravalle and becomes the river Chienti. The remaining marshland that once covered the entire plain is now a protected area part of which stretches over the Umbrian border.
