Loc.tà Plestia
La basilica di S. Maria di Plestia, popolarmente detta anche ‘Madonna di Pistia’, sorge dentro l’area archeologica dell’antica Pistia, città umbra che, conosciuto il massimo splendore in epoca romana, sparì intorno al Mille per motivi ignoti. La chiesa, d’impianto rettangolare, era stata costruita sui resti di un tempio pagano del IV secolo, utilizzando i materiali da costruzione trovati in loco. Distrutta insieme alla città di Pistia, fu ricostruita nell’XI secolo: all’epoca risalgono l’abside semicircolare (recentemente, dopo un ulteriore crollo, ricostruita in ferro e vetro) e la cripta. La parte sotterranea, dove si trovano i resti del tempio romano e la cripta, è la più suggestiva della costruzione.
The Basilica, known locally as ‘Madonna di Pistia’, is within the archeological site of Pistia, an old Umbrian city that enjoyed its heyday in Roman times and disappeared due to unknown circumstances about the year 1000. The church, built to a rectangular plan, was erected on the site of a IV Century pagan temple, recycling building materials found on the site. It fell with the city of Pistia, and was rebuilt in the XI Century: a semicircular apse remains (though it was renovated in metal and glass after a recent collapse), as does the crypt. The most intriguing part of the building is under ground, where the remains of the Roman temple and the crypt can be visited.
