Castelsantangelo sul Nera rises near the source of the river Nera among woods and not far from the skiing facilities at Monte Prata. The decision was made in the XI Century to form the Castrum Sancti Angeli, creating a safe shelter for the valley people, who were regularly subjected to raids. Its origins are Umbrian, a tribe dedicated to shepherding and working wool. The enclosing walls and group of houses surrounding the Medieval castle are still standing.
